Carolyn Pianin


Ms. Pianin’s expertise includes underwriting investments, deal structuring and asset/portfolio management which she applies to analyze and resolve client’s issues. Ms. Pianin collaborates with management teams to maximize asset value in a variety of ways which include transaction management, tracking performance against business plans, resolving operating and tenant-related issues, and ensuring compliance with key loan and operating agreements.


Ms. Pianin has underwritten and closed over a $2.5 billion of investments, and managed over 50 million square feet of commercial real estate assets, approximately 8,000 multi-family units and more than a dozen hotels.  With over 25 years of experience in a variety of senior level positions, she possesses a broad-based knowledge of asset management, restructuring and underwriting of both equity and debt positions, with direct experience dealing with all levels of the capital stack, including equity, senior secured debt, subordinated notes and mezzanine financings.  With the intelligence gathered from these experiences, she has been able to thoughtfully advise clients on complex situations and workouts.


Ms. Pianin worked for AIG Global Real Estate for over a decade, where she held a variety of senior positions, which included managing AIG’s domestic real estate portfolio of over 6 million SF of shopping centers across the US and in Puerto Rico. In this role, Ms. Pianin was AIG’s board representative for both AIG/Baker and Caribbean Retail Ventures. 


While at AIG, Ms. Pianin originated, underwrote and closed over $1.5 billion of investments in office, retail, hospitality and multifamily properties as well as senior housing and entertainment properties.  In addition, Ms. Pianin represented AIG as a tenant – negotiating small commercial leases (under 5,000 SF each) – in over 500,000 SF of transactions across the country.  Ms. Pianin  also underwrote and managed AIG’s joint venture with Ontra, which invested in and worked out just under $1 billion in RTC loan portfolios.


Ms. Pianin has also held senior positions at Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec, GE Capital, and Starwood Capital.


Ms. Pianin is a member of the Cornell Real Estate Council and the Turnaround Management Association.  She is also the President of the Fairfield Villages Wellesley Club and a member of Wellesley’s Alumnae Leadership Council. Ms. Pianin graduated from Wellesley College, received an MBA from the Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University and a Masters in Real Estate from New York University’s Schack Institute.
